WINTERVILLE—When Pitt Community College administrators dedicated the Greenville Toyota Welding Technology Building this spring, they spent much of the ceremony thanking the individuals and organizations that made the new training facility possible, including SPC Mechanical.
Established in 1965, SPC Mechanical is a family owned and operated mechanical contractor with construction and service operations throughout North Carolina. Its specialties include commercial HVAC and plumbing, prefabrication, building information modeling, virtual design and construction, and HVAC installation, making it important for the company to hire skilled welders.
According to Styron Wood, who has worked for SPC Mechanical more than 30 years, the PCC welding program has proven to be an essential source for finding employees. He explained that college’s talented and committed welding instructors provide “top quality leadership” to students while emphasizing the “importance of hard work and old school values like being on time” and working well with others.
“One of our biggest concerns as a major mechanical contractors is finding good, well prepared people to help us with our projects,” Wood said. “In PCC, we have seen that their commitment to the welding and HVAC curriculums is second to none. From all of the talented staff and leaders in the trade schools to the folks at the PCC Foundation, you all give SPC Mechanical confidence that PCC will provide us with talented people to help us continue building on our legacy for years to come.”
Wood said SPC Mechanical believes individuals who choose to continue their education after high school are more motivated and prepared to enter the workforce and that PCC has proven to be a great place for students to achieve their educational goals. He said it’s important for the company to support PCC, which is why SPC Mechanical made a contribution to the PCC Foundation to name a patio at the new welding building.
“We have built and will build many buildings in this region and it is important for us to hire well prepared individuals to add to our staff that will allow us to maintain our reputation as the one leading mechanical contractors in the state,” Wood said. “We fully believe that the PCC welding program will be an important piece to help us continue to build our reputation.”
Originally Southern Piping Company, a rebranding for its 50th anniversary in 2015 gave SPC Mechanical its current name. The company’s headquarters are in Wendell.
